Madalen Claire Benson is an arts professional, writer, and curator from the West Coast of Canada, currently based on the traditional territory of the Snuneymuxw, Snaw-naw-as, and Stz’uminus First Nations, also known as Nanaimo, BC. She holds a Master of Arts in Art History, Theory and Criticism from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2019) and a Bachelor of Arts, Honours in Art History and Philosophy from the University of Toronto (2014). She has published with the University of Cambridge (2016) and the University of Minnesota Press (2020). Benson has presented her research at conferences around the US and in the UK. Her research and work concerns the legacies of settler colonialism, land-based practices, and environmentalism.
She was the Project Coordinator and Curator for Art @ YXT, an exhibition program at the Northwest Regional Airport Terrace-Kitimat (2019), the Programming Manager for Capture Photography Festival in Vancouver (2019-), and the Organizer of the Skeena Salmon Art Show, Terrace, Hazelton, and Smithers, BC (2020-). Benson was the Vice-President for the Abbotsford Arts Council Board of Directors (2019-2020), and a participating curator in the Shanghai Curators Lab residency, Shanghai, CN (2019). Benson is beginning a PhD in Visual Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz in Fall 2021.
